It Takes a Village: Why Breastfeeding Support Matters

World Breastfeeding Week 2025: "It Takes a Village"
This year’s theme is all about connection, because breastfeeding doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes support, kindness, and a community of people who lift mums up.
Here’s a look at how that village shows up, and where you can find yours here in Aotearoa...

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but what they don’t always say is how much that village also supports a breastfeeding mama.

Because while breastfeeding is natural, it’s not always easy. It can be raw, emotional, and at times completely overwhelming. And the truth is, doing it alone can feel near impossible.

That’s where your village comes in.

Sometimes it's your partner bringing you a glass of water (again).
Or a friend replying “you’re doing amazing” when you vent at 11pm.
It could be your midwife, your mum, a lactation consultant, or even a stranger in a mum group saying exactly what you needed to hear that day.

Support shows up in so many ways, a hot meal, a reassuring look, someone holding the baby so you can shower, or a message that reminds you you’re not alone.

But your village isn’t just made up of friends and whānau, there are amazing services and support networks across Aotearoa, created just for you.

At The Lactation Station, we’re honoured to be part of this village in our own way, whether that’s through a cookie that gives you a moment of calm, a cuppa to sip while you feed, or a reminder that you’re not alone.

So if you're in the thick of it right now, feeding on demand, doubting yourself, or running on zero sleep, reach out. You’re doing better than you think, and your village is right here with you.

You’ve got this, mama. 💕
